Dookie
Green Day (1994)
An album that I listened to countless times when I was in junior high and high school is turning 30 years old today. Dookie is Green Day's third album, but it's the first of their records that I heard. I strongly suspect that this is true for the majority of their fans, although every kid I knew back in the mid 90's would swear that they had been listening to 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk for years.
Dookie is a catchy pop-punk album that seems in retrospect to have been tailor made for teenage boys in the 90's. Many of its songs were played in heavy rotation on the radio and MTV, but none got more airtime than Basket Case. This music video played at least four times an hour on MTV after it was released. It's not my favorite song on the album, but it's definitely the one that I think of first.
