George Frayne
1944 - 2021
Alt rock pioneer George Frayne, better known to many as Commander Cody, passed away on September 26th at the age of 77. His band, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen were a band like none other. They blended rockabilly, blues, country, swing, and jazz to create a sound that I want to call hillbilly punk rock for lack of a more accurate term.
His band came to my attention from one of their music videos which I found on a recording of a block of MTV from May 30th, 1982. It's a fun song with visual effects that are very low-fi by today's standards, but it was many years ahead of its time and is a part of the permanent video archive of the Museum of Modern Art. Listen to it and I can guarantee you that the chorus of "two triple cheese, side order of fries" will be stuck in your head for at least a week.
