The John Carpenter sci-fi classic that's set in the far off world of 1997 premiered in theaters thirty years ago today. It's billed on this marquee alongside the May 1981 film Firecracker, which was described in its trailer as "the first erotic martial arts thriller". I guess everybody really was kung-fu fighting.
